Recall effort against California Governor Gavin Newsom
In recent months, many bills have been presented to the California Senate. One of these bills, SB 663, aims to end voter privacy. This bill seeks to release addresses and names of those who signed the recall petition against California Governor Gavin Newsom. Within the first section of SB 663, it states,
"(1) Provide a mechanism for the target of a recall petition to communicate with constituents who may have signed that petition."This bill intends to put at risk of harassment the people who spoke out against the governor and increases the chance for discrimination. The democratic campaign against voter suppression seemed genuine, but the truth seems to be less optimistic.
In California, attempts at suppressing the republican vote have been present since Arnold Schwarzenegger. In October, a judge threw out an attempt to "investigate" GOP ballot boxes. "A one-page form signed by Brown says there is “no immediate harm or irreparable injury” to the state in the Republican Party’s refusal to comply with a subpoena seeking information about voters whose ballots have been collected and the locations of the private drop boxes in communities across the state" (LA Times). This is not the only attempt of the Democratic party to suppress opposition, in November, the Supreme Court of California invalidated a law taking Donald J. Trump's name off of the Presidential ballot. My assembly representative, Jim Patterson, announced
We are pleased that the courts saw through the Democrats’ petty partisan maneuvers and saw this law for what it is — an unconstitutional attempt to suppress Republican voter turnout. The Democrats' attempt at suppression is a rampant issue in California, yet media sources such as NBC resort to new laws in Georgia to focus on.
The republicans of California were prepared for laws to come out suppressing the vote. Newsom even banned mail-in voting in fear of voter fraud. The thing that had the democrats yelling at Trump for calling voter fraud on the "worlds most secure election." Newsom has been so hypocritical in the executive orders and legislation he signs. SB 663 also provides a way for voters to change their signatures, maybe after excessive harassment by the Newsom campaign.
(2) Provide a meaningful opportunity for voters who may have signed a recall petition to withdraw their signatures.
The end to voter privacy is just the beginning, someday our voters will be too scared to vote against the democratic party. They would be in fear of losing their work, their lives, their means to live. The start to voter suppression is not within republican states or republican filled state legislatures, it is within democratic supermajority states. Fear is the one object the democratic party uses to gain support, without this, they would have no party. No state, person, corporation, or group of persons should have the power to hold fear over a citizen, their families, or the safety and welfare of their beliefs. Feeding the partisan state is only the start of tyranny, with the end being oppression and death. No amount of fear is worth the cost of putting all of America in one man's rule.
